So, here’s the deal. Stampede is awesome and everyone should go. But if you are only coming to Calgary once, then it is important you book one of our trips where you can do both the Stampede and the FreeBird Trip at the same time. This means there are 2 options for you… If you book the June 29 Trip, you get back on July 8th and then will be able to check out the Stampede after and stay as long as you’d like including going to the finals rodeo if that is of interest to you. If you book the July 13th Trip, you can come early as early as you like and go to the Stampede before the trip. And, we will be sure to send you all the details about Stampede so you know where to go when, local insider info of cool partyies and events, free entertainment, and of course how to buy tickets and all that important stuff!! Makes life easy, but also makes it so those trips fill up very fast. So, book now and save your spot – Stampede and FreeBird – it does not get any better!!

Our last trip of the season started off with the best weather you could ever ask for – not only in September – but all summer long! The sun was shining in Lake Louise – no rain – no snow – just clear blue skies for 2 solid days. Best weather we have ever had there. Amazing. Then at Peyto – it was a shock to arrive to no tour buses and literally one couple taking a photo – we had the place to ourselves – a true FreeBird first. Banff was quieter than normal – all the summer tourists gone home – which did not stop us from dancing the night away to “The FreeBird Band” (a Skynyrd cover band) – pretty cool. Then – it was off to Golden where there may have been a bit of “Farmer Interaction”. Not sure how to describe it – but basically (once again) a plan was made by the FreeBird team to mess with clients and it was carried off somewhat successfully – except that Justins tent will never be the same… The Finns taught us about their vodka…and we taught them about FreeBirds. There was Onesies – for almost everyone – which kinda shocked the crap outta the FreeBird team as it was a surprise for us in Kelowna – but more surprising to them was we insisted they wear them out and about for a goat cheese tour and some even made it as far as the Summerland Sweets ...

The Finns taught us about their vodka…and we taught them about FreeBirds.

There was Onesies – for almost everyone – which kinda shocked the crap outta the FreeBird team as it was a surprise for us in Kelowna – but more surprising to them was we insisted they wear them out and about for a goat cheese tour and some even made it as far as the Summerland Sweets tour. So much fun.

And this group could play games. By far the best group at Back Country we have ever seen – they easily got to 2 signs and a sound, and I am pretty sure they were also the best at “F#$k”. I know I drank more than them for screwing up! All in all, a great trip with a great group. It was a great way to end our season.

When we had only 5 people booked in for this trip, we were a little worried it would be a quieter trip than we were used to – what a mistake that was! With only 5, we made more noise, partied harder, drank more and played harder than we normally do with 12 people! The weather was beyond amazing – perfect to be exact – not once did we have to put up the tarp and back country could not have been more perfect. Some good bear and moose sightings – mostly for Bentley as she passed them in camp and along the beach in Nelson. And on this trip, we went to Victoria for the Dragon Boat Festival – some of us saw them, some of us ended up in the beer tent and didn’t quite make it to the actual races – but we got the gist of it! Soaring and Skydiving and Biking were on the agenda as usual in Whistler – but it came with our first ever hospital visit for a client – but what a great pick up line that cast made hey Bentley?! Get’s ‘em every time. Kelowna was cloudy and windy – the one day we expect it to be perfect – so we went to a movie – one of the worst movies ever – and seriously – not sure what we expected with the title “Cowboys and Aliens” – but man was it horrible. Kelowna was cloudy and windy – the one day we expect it to be perfect – so we went to a movie – one of the worst movies ever – and seriously – not sure what we expected with the title “Cowboys and Aliens” – but man was it horrible. Not on FreeBirds most recommended list. Back Country brought another FreeBird first – Group Hand Grenades – the drink not the weapon – although just as deadly I’d say. Every hour on the hour (except when we were missing our swimmers), might not have been the best idea I ever had. But, it all worked out – we went on a Sam Hunt, found her, and we all survived until the booze ran out! If there was ever a discussion about the definition of puking and spewing – this group has it down to a science, and we all know the difference now – unfortunately. Good times. As for Team FreeBird – none of us got kicked out of the bar on 80′s night which was good, and we had a little extra time to “play” this time around. Check out Stian’s incredible video footage of Justin doing the best / scariest bungee jump ever, and I finally got up in the sky for paragliding and soaring – awesome. Even got out on a Jet Boat – super cool and something you should all come back on FreeBird and do now that we know it exists! All in all a great trip with great people. Thanks for the laughs (and the lessons in swearing). See you soon for the year end party where we hope to do less Hand Grenades and more FreeBirds. Don’t worry Wease – I still remember I owe you one. It will happen.

So – Here I am back at Base Camp wondering how that 2 weeks flew by so fast?! The first few days of our trip were pretty quiet, that is if you forget about Steve in his Pink Onesie in Banff (yes – he wore it at the country bar all night), which most of us are still trying to recover from. But as Justin amazed everyone with his skills with Poi (usually fire on a string – but this time very cool lights), and we got to Golden and we “screwed around” with everyone a little with our friend Farmer – things started to lighten up. Although I am still pretty sure they were a little scared of us for the first little bit – especially after the complete lack of trust we created with the whole Farmer incident. Totally worth it though. And now for next time….hmmmmm??!?! 80′s night was a bit of a disaster for some – who knew you had to be 18 to get in, and sharing ID was a bad idea? Good thing for my negotiating skills, as all ended well and although I will owe Jeff random favours for the rest of the summer, it all worked out. Crankworx was awesome – great entertainment and so good to see so many people out biking – it is an amazing experience that according to the guys “we need to make everyone do”. Good thing for my negotiating skills, as all ended well and although I will owe Jeff random favours for the rest of the summer, it all worked out. Crankworx was awesome – great entertainment and so good to see so many people out biking – it is an amazing experience that according to the guys “we need to make everyone do”. Vancouver was, as always, full of stories – most which can not be shared here, and then it was off to Kelowna to go to the beach and dig a hole – a favourite pastime of certain FB Staff.

We ended our night there at the strippers – always a great experience, especially for those first timers – and of course one more thing to chalk up to the fact that Justin and I hang out waaaay too much in all the wrong places together. Casper still has not wiped the grin off his face – so it was a good first experience I am guessing. Nelson brought a hot dinner date, yoga classes and some incredible weather – we got sunshine and then a rain storm – all which made for a great “day of rest”. Then Back Country brought on the final party – where this group really let loose – best back country party so far – thanks to Kia

for the entertainment, and for the guys who decided that fully dressed – like shoes and all – was the best way to go into the lake. We showed them the correct way to skinny dip later – the way it was meant to be! And although there was an ankle injury due to first time drunkenness – no deaths, which in Yanniks case – a good thing! Then on the way home we got to save some baby bear cubs from their untimely death on the highway – caused a crazy traffic hazard, but once the authorities got there – all was well in the bear world once again.

All in all – a good time had. Some great memories and some friendships to last a lifetime. Thanks for making our job so much fun!

Where to start….so many great things happened on this trip. I guess we should start with the best Griz sighting we have ever had. He just hung out and let us take pictures forever – we actually left before he did. He was massive – and beautiful. Our other bear sighting was a little more strange – on the paintball field of all places! A Moose even dropped by for a quick visit on our last day, so all around pretty good animal viewings. Weather was amazing – although it could have rained a bit more in “Bat Country” as it would have helped with those damn mossy’s, but the lake was a great refuge! How Mel survived in her bare arms and legs is a miracle – must have been because she had a totally different focus all night?! Justin got knighted, we hung out with Steve Nash, and found out that we were in the presence of a baroness. Soaring and Skydiving for the more daring, and the Danes got the “highest” of everyone at the bouncy house in Whistler – pretty cool new place to hang out – thanks for showing us the way and for making the intro boys! River Float was awesome – great weather – all the way to the end – go figure. A FreeBird first (one of many this trip) was Onesie and his stylin’ red PJ’s – hope you had fun wearing those to Stampede!! And – for the first time ever we got to hang out with the Brazilians on FreeBird – thanks for making another first! The rounds of “Backcountry” were pretty awesome – and now that we all know how to say “SHEET” the Canadian way, we are all set! This trip was by far one of our best – even with the flat tires and broken windows – and we have our awesome clients to thank for that. We will miss you and can not wait to see you again soon. Until then ….

We always like to have a weekend with the FreeBird Team before the season starts – reminisce, make plans, remember what FreeBird is all about – and this year we went to Golden for the weekend and it was incredible! We started off at the Wolf Sanctuary, then headed to the Buffalo Ranch to see Chester (the 2000lb bull) and ended our little day tour at the Moberly Pub, with a follow up at the Mad Trapper. We went on a bit of a twilight sightseeing tour – and got to see 9 bears including a mom and her three cubs and they were so tiny and just adorable – a great experience for sure. The next day we headed out on the water with our new white water rafting guides and rocked class three and four plus all the way down the Kicking Horse – this season the rafting is going to be record breaking – meaning awesome in every way! From there it was horseback riding at the Eco Adventure Ranch with Flying W – terrific! Then there may have been some team bonding around the fire with a few bottles and the campground staff – always good times with Amy and Jamie. The next day began with a visit up to see Infinity Solstice and the spectacular Disc Golf Course he has – truly the most scenic course in the world I am sure. Can not wait to go back and spend a whole day there, but alas, we had to head back to the ranch for paragliding – Scott and Hugo were in true form as they took Brian and Justin out on their amazing flight. And then, to finish the day off it was a round of 18 up at Golden Golf Course – once again – the beauty of this area never ceases to amaze us. All in all – a great start to the season and it is so terrific to have Justin back as the most integral part of our team. We look forward to going again in a few weeks with clients and showing them our favourite parts of Golden!
